We’ve all been there – soon after we get hold of our first guitar we know that to play anything people are actually going to listen to we need to “learn a few chords”. These first few chords for most beginners end up being the open position chords, down at the first few frets.

Soon, we begin to associate these basic chords with shapes – E, A, D, C and G shapes. These 5 shapes are way more fundamental than we initially think, because once it comes to mastering the dreaded F chord, or more accurately, the “E-shape barre”, we immediately feel liberated – we can now create major and minor chord variations up and down the neck.

Some stop there. Some may even go on to realize the “A shape barre” (based on the A string) can widen our scope of tone and voicing that little bit more. True, these two movable shapes are indeed enough for most of today’s middle-of-the-road rock music. You can write great songs with a mix of the 5 open position shapes, and these two barre shapes, even epics!

But why stop there? Why limit yourself at all? There’s so much more to discover on the fretboard. Different voicings – voicings that can make a chord on its own sound 10 times more intricately lush. The truth is, as guitarists get into their 2nd year of playing, these fixed form chords begin to sound, well…a little dull.

Too many guitarists are missing out on producing music that will astound themselves, let alone others, because of their love affair with the quick-reference chord chart, learning parrot fashion, shrugging off any understanding of “what that chord would sound like voiced…here” and knowing your several options.

You may be thinking “this sounds complicated, where do I go from here? What do I need to learn to be able to think outside the box when it comes to constructing interesting chords?”

Two words that will make some jump into their guitar case – chord theory

Chord theory is a subject area of guitar that doesn’t necessarily have to be pretentious, elitist or just for jazz/classical guitarists. Explained and learned the right way, knowing some basic guitar chord theory can open up a songwriting factory in your head, producing its goods right on your guitar.

There are 5 steps you need to go through to reach your guitar chord nirvana (and I DON’T mean the band!), the first 3 you probably already have…

1) Learn the 5 barre chord shapes (E, A, C, D and G)

2) Learn the major scale in 8 (yes, eight) different positions based around these barre shapes

3) Use your knowledge of the major scale to create triads, 7ths and extended chords in several positions on the fretboard. This is the foundation for building unique and interesting chord voicings.

4) Use your knowledge of chord construction to create unique chord voicings with inversions all over the fretboard.

5) Don’t forget to “float” chords occasionally with open strings.

Once you invest a little of your practice time learning chord theory basics (it doesn’t take long to pick up), you’ll start to investigate the fretboard as second nature. You’ll come up with chord progressions and really use your ears to identify the “right” chord for the change. Your playing will open up to a diverse range of styles.

Most of all though, creating unique original music that is truly “you” won’t be limited by the size of a chord chart – it will only be limited by the 6 strings on your guitar.

When you learn to play the guitar your first stock in trade is the number of chords you can play. To get any decent sort of repertoire you need to learn as many guitar chords as possible. For the beginner it can be very confusing and overwhelming because there are literally thousands of chords. Using a printable guitar chords chart for reference is very useful for the first year or so.

Learn the main forms of the chords

There are obscure versions of chords that you can ignore at first. So for the chord of A you only need to learn 3 versions. A major, A minor (Am) and A seven (A7). So when you come across a piece of music that asks for A two or A nine just ignore this and play one of the 3 main chords. This will usually be the major version of the chord.

Second Stage Of Learning Guitar Chords

Once you have mastered and remembered the 3 main chords in each key you can then start treating yourself to some of the more unusual guitar chords. If you forget your standard chords you can just refer to your guitar chords chart to jog your memory. The second stage of learning chords will have you sounding much more interesting. There is a music phase or fashion at the moment of replacing the Major version of a chord with the 2 chord. What this means is that you replace A Major with A two (A2). The other very popular chords are the bossa nova guitar chords such as the major sevenths. For example C major seven (CMaj7). As soon as you add these bossa nova chords and other variations your playing will change and become much more interesting.

Changing The Bass Notes

All the chords discussed here will be on any guitar chords chart. What you will not have is the alterantive bass notes. The Group U2 are the greatest exponents of this technique. What you do is keep the same bass note playing all the way through while you change all the other parts of the chord. So in the key of A you can play the chords of A, D & E but leave the 5th string open with the Bass note of A playing for all the chords. This would be written A. D/A, E/A. A good learning technique is to play around with these alternative bass notes when playing guitar chords.

I’m surprised how many people today still rely on an html color chart to pick colors. Unfortunately, anyone who does a search online for a type of color chart like this is probably looking for web safe colors, not realizing that the term itself is obsolete. What’s worse is that most websites that come up on this topic still imply that it’s important to stick to this absolutely horrible selection of colors. Maybe these are simply old sites deeply rooted in search engine indexes. Either way, a lot of first time web designers are inevitably being misled on how to go about choosing colors for the Web.

Let me clear up some of the confusion by first saying that it’s not necessary to stick to a web safe color palette. Maybe it was six years ago, but not anymore. When I first started building websites in 2001, I tried my hardest to venture away from that disgusting collection of colors. Sure, I could enter whatever hex color I wanted in my html code and cross my fingers that it would look the same on more than one computer. Sometimes it worked. Sometimes it didn’t. That really nice warm gray background I created at work would be a dirty pink on my computer at home.

Back then I couldn’t understand why the web safe colors had to be that particular selection of hues. I mean really, how many different shades of fluorescent green do we need on the Web? Of course, the fact of the matter is that web safe colors were not picked for designers in the first place. There are a lot of technical reasons why we had to start out with that nauseating palette, but fortunately since then browsers and computer monitors have improved at lightening speed. Today everyone can see just about any color you want to serve up to them.

So does the html color chart serve any purpose today? I’m thinking probably not, at least not in its current form. What designers mostly need is a guide that offers different color schemes, along with the related hex codes that can be easily copied and pasted into an html editor. Now that we can pick nearly any color imaginable for our websites, the challenge is to find new and interesting ways to combine hues, shades, and tints – all in ways that were virtually unthinkable just five or six years ago.

Virtually all website building software now comes with a user-friendly font color selection tool, so the need for a hexadecimal color code chart is not always necessary to have in designing and formatting your website font and background colors. However, under certain circumstances, it is still convenient to have a color code chart or table available as a handy reference for quick font and background editing.

There are times, after previewing a site you have been building, that you will find a particular line of text or hyperlink that does not appear to have the proper font color to adequately fit in or stand out amongst the content of the page as you wish. Some online webpage builders have website templates that have the font color set in a particular hexadecimal color code as a default setting. If you prefer not to change the default setting, generally because the majority of text and hyperlinks will be created using the default color, you may find times where a hyperlink or text content will be using the default font color, though it does not suit the appearance and presentation of the particular page content you are designing.

In this case, there are several choices you have in editing the html or xml code of the content to bring the content color in line with what you are trying to achieve. If the content on the page you are working on is smaller and includes basic text without a lot of other layout codes, it is very simple to open the website content editing software, choose the particular text or content, and change the color with the dropdown or fly-out color code chart. If the page or content code is somewhat large with a lot of tables, hyperlinks, images, etc, you may find it easier to select the html code away from the site building interface and simply insert or change the particular content with the hexadecimal color code you want to use. After changing the code in a text editor, you simply “select all” and paste the new code to the page you are working on.

The reason this is sometimes useful is that opening a large and intricate array of content code will sometimes change little bits and pieces of the formatting of tables, images, hyperlinks, etc, and make reloading, editing, and saving the new code a repetitive and never ending attempt to achieve the final result you need. Many times, the page building software will remove return breaks, change hyperlink colors to the default color, resize or lose an image setting, and even lose a table row or column setting, among other annoying changes.

By having a simple hexadecimal color code chart available to use outside of the page building software, you are able to make minor adjustments to the website and page content, without opening the large and intricate array of code in the page builder software. If–for the most part–the page content is appearing as you wish with maybe only a few small areas of content, titles, or hyperlinks needing a color change, editing the html code in a text editor will allow you the ability to edit or insert the new color code without risking changes to the overall content.

What I have found most practical, is to save the html code of a hexadecimal color code chart to a basic text editor that can be opened in a separate browser window. There are sources available in software, books, and some internet sites, that have un-copyrighted hexadecimal color code chart numbers available to be used for non-commercial and personal use. By saving these codes in an html file, the hexadecimal color code table or chart can be opened in a separate browser making a convenient color pallet for font color, background color, and table color editing and referencing. Simply save the hexadecimal color code chart as; for example: colorchart.html. For quick access, drag the saved file to your quick launch toolbar location, and on two clicks, you will have an opened color pallet, hexadecimal color code chart for easy content coloring, adjusting, and editing. A piano chord chart is a very useful tool, particularly if you’re in the beginner piano lessons stage. Chords provide the basis and structure of your piano playing. The more you learn about chords, the easier will be for you to play many styles of music.

A Basic Chart for Chords on Piano

The piano chord chart available for you to download provides the basic mayor, minor and seventh chords. After you memorize many chords you’ll be able to cover other music areas such as: playing from a fake book, writing songs, piano accompaniment, improvisation, arranging, etc.

Pretty much all popular music, regardless of the style, shows the chord symbols on the staff. If you take a look at a classical piano piece, you’ll notice there are no chord symbols above the notes. Of course classical composers used chords and harmonies as the basis of their music, but it wasn’t customary then to write chord symbols.

I thought it was very strange that none of the teachers could play along with her son. After I met with the mother she showed me the sheet music of the two popular songs planned for the recital. They were what we call lead sheets, in other words, sheet music with only the melody and the chord symbols above the melody notes, no left hand notes.

The reason why none of the teachers could play the accompaniment is because, although they knew how to play piano chords, they didn’t know how to use them in an accompaniment. In other words, they couldn’t do an arrangement based on chords (more about this on future lessons). As you learn more chords from this piano chord chart, you’ll see how resourceful chords can be.

I realize that you probably are not at this stage yet, but I just wanted to give you an example of the many possibilities available to you once you become proficient with your chords. This is a basic piano chord chart, and later on I’ll include a more complete chart in case you want to learn play chords on piano for more advanced players.

If you were blessed with a special ear for music, then it will be easier for you to learn chords and you’ll appreciate even more the importance and advantage of having this chord knowledge to improve your piano playing.

Learning about guitar chords can be a little intimidating for beginners. There are so many possible chords to choose from. And they have weird names. The names can be difficult to categorize and file in your head. The technicalities and writing of music and chord naming leaves a lot to be desired. I haven’t found a better way though so I will just have to reserve any further moans about it until I do. Don’t be put off because chord names sound like some sadistic maths teachers idea of a joke. You don’t have to worry about the technicalities too much because God, or someone God-like, invented chord charts just for you and me. A great way to start learning chords is simply to pick some out of a chart and practice playing them. If you want real progress use a chart that has almost every chord imaginable and simply play with it.

Experiment with different chord combinations. If the combination isn’t working, you will hear it. Just keep playing with chords you want to play with and combine them as you learn more to extend your range. If you don’t hear that the combination working, its probably not. Chord charts also give you a very handy visual reference to any music you want to learn that names the chord but doesn’t show the chord structure to you. There’s plenty of written music out there that tells you what chord to use but doesn’t show the chord. Having an excellent chord chart is a must have for any budding or advanced guitar player. The chart will give you many more options than basic lessons.

I’m not saying replace your lessons with a chord chart. I’m saying a guitar chord chart is worth its weight in gold for anyone learning to play guitar. How to have some fun. Find the written music or chord sequence online for a song you would really like to learn. Then find all the chords on your chart and learn the ones you don’t already know. Doing that will accelerate your guitar playing incredibly well. Not only that, but you are going to have a load of fun learning and expanding your repertoire on the guitar. If you want to learn to play guitar, I will try to guide you through some basic steps, which are very important. The first thing you should check is the correct position in which you hold the guitar. After doing that you should look for some warm up exercises which will help your fingers get used to the fretboard.

After you get comfortable with your guitar it is time to learn some chords. There are tons of chords to learn, but you don’t need to learn all of them. You just need to learn a few of them, because you can figure the other ones very fast. For instance, you learn E minor and by moving across the fingerboard one step and also holding all the chords at the first fret you get F minor and so on. So basically after learning the basic chords you can expand very easily.

After this step is complete you can proceed to the more complicated chords. These will be a bit harder to remember, but you could easily use Google to find printable chord charts you need in order to learn more effectively. This way you can have them anywhere with you and when you have a little free time you can take a look at them and try to memorize more complicated chords. This will help you a lot.

After a while you will have learned the great guitar vocabulary, meaning you will have a lot of known chords with which you can start experimenting with, maybe compose your own song. If you want to go even further, you can alternate bass notes for the chords you learned. This means you keep one bass note and you only change the other part of the chord.

In my opinion, if you follow these steps you will be able to learn the basics pretty fast. The best way to follow these steps is to spare some time each day for it, something like an hour of practice. With patience you will get better and remember, there is no way to fail if you practice right!
